Precise positioning is fundamental to all survey and engineering operations at sea. Fugro provides three truly independent DGPS services in West Africa.
The Starfix.HP system uses a network of over 80 strategically sited DGPS reference stations worldwide, of which some 15 are located in Africa. Starfix.HP is Fugro's most accurate DGPS system, providing decimetre accuracy both horizontally and vertically.
Corrections for both Starfix and SkyFix are broadcast using multiple commercial satellites, to be received by Fugro demodulators installed on vessels operating worldwide.
SkyFix.XP is an extremely accurate DGPS service that allows users to derive positions with decimetre level precision.
The service is based around corrections to the broadcast GPS orbit and clock information. This technique is therefore called Satellite
Differential GPS (SDGPS) as the differential corrections are for the actual satellites, as opposed to a geographical area.
A third system available in West Africa is the HF-DGPS systems. Local reference stations and radio transmitters provide a direct link to the vessel, offering a fully independent DGPS system.
